Self-Regulation

What is Self-Regulation?

Self-regulation is the ability to appropriately manage emotions, behavior, and attention in different situations. (Morin, n.d.).

Examples

  • Instead of yelling a child starts taking deep breaths.
  • A child is patiently waiting for their turn during an activity or to play with a toy another child has.
  • When becoming frusturated they will ask a caregiver or teacher for help.

How teachers can support self-regulation

  • Model Calm Behavior: (tone and body language)
  • Teach Coping Strategies: (deep breathing, counting down, taking a break)
  • Visual Supports: (calm-down steps, emotion charts, and feeling check ins)

Students often need explicit instruction and practice to build these skills, especially students with ADHD and/or other challenges. (Morin, n.d.)
